KAUNOS ROYAL TOMBS

The ancient city of Kaunos, located on the Köyceğiz–Dalyan line in Muğla, is an important ancient settlement bearing traces of both Carian and Lycian civilizations. Thanks to its strategic location, it became a powerful center for trade and maritime activities in antiquity. Although its harbor has been filled with alluvium over time, its historical importance and remains are still impressive today. One of the most striking structures of the city is the magnificent royal tombs carved into the rocks. These tombs, especially visible from Dalyan, have become a symbol of Kaunos. The ancient theater is also quite well-preserved and offers visitors both a historical atmosphere and a magnificent view. Many other structures such as the agora, baths, temple ruins, and city walls can also be seen in Kaunos. The city plan reflects the urban planning understanding of its time while simultaneously showing the influence of different civilizations. In this respect, Kaunos is not only an archaeological site but also a cultural crossroads.

It is located approximately 30 kilometers from the center of Köyceğiz and can be reached by car in about 35-40 minutes. The fact that it can also be accessed via boat tours from Dalyan makes it a special route that can be explored both by land and sea. The view from the ancient theater at sunset offers visitors an unforgettable experience.
